Het was even een maand of zeven stil, maar zojuist heeft WikiLeaks weer nieuwe geheime documenten gepubliceerd. Deze keer gaat het om brochures, handleidingen en dergelijke van bedrijven die spionagediensten aanbieden. WikiLeaks noemt de tranche documenten dan ook The Spy Files.
Volgens een begeleidend commentaar laten de documenten zien dat:
Intelligence agencies, military forces and police authorities are able to silently, and on mass, and secretly intercept calls and take over computers without the help or knowledge of the telecommunication providers. Users’ physical location can be tracked if they are carrying a mobile phone, even if it is only on stand by.
(…) Intelligence companies such as VASTech secretly sell equipment to permanently record the phone calls of entire nations. Others record the location of every mobile phone in a city, down to 50 meters. Systems to infect every Facebook user, or smart-phone owner of an entire population group are on the intelligence market.
Onder de documenten zit ook een videopresentatie van een bedrijf dat kennelijk diensten aanbiedt om af te luisteren, wachtwoorden te ontfutselen of email te lezen.
Voor duiding kunnen we terecht bij onder andere Washington Post, die een van de media is die nu met WikiLeaks samenwerkt. Twee interessante alinea’s uit het artikel Trade in surveillance technology raises worries:
But the surveillance products themselves make no distinction between bad guys and good guys, only users and targets. Several years of industry sales brochures provided to The Washington Post by the anti-secrecy group WikiLeaks, and released publicly Thursday, reveal that many companies are selling sophisticated tools capable of going far beyond conventional investigative techniques.
“People are morally outraged by the traditional arms trade, but they don’t realize that the sale of software and equipment that allows oppressive regimes to monitor the movements, communications and Internet activity of entire populations is just as dangerous,” said Eric King of Privacy International, a London-based group that seeks to limit government surveillance. Sophisticated surveillance technology “is facilitating detention, torture and execution,” he said, “and potentially smothering the flames of another Arab Spring.”
Hoe WikiLeaks aan de documenten komt is niet bekend. Het logo voor The Spy Files suggereert dat ze via een USB-stick bij Julian Assange of een van zijn collega’s zijn terecht gekomen. In ieder geval is de oude manier – via een veilige verbinding naar de website sturen – al meer dan een jaar niet beschikbaar. Afgelopen maandag zou WikiLeaks eigenlijk het nieuwe verzendsysteem online zetten, maar liet weten dat dat systeem nog niet klaar is.
Due to the deteriorating state of internet security which directly impacts the ability of sources to communicate with journalists and human rights activists securely, WikiLeaks has decided to postpone the launch initially scheduled for Monday 28th 2011 in the interest of source protection.
